Hip Circle Studio News
While you should always check the web calendar for last minute additions or changes to the calendar, here is a printable version of our current schedule. Feel free to print one out to share with a friend, and a couple more to post at your office or favorite spot around town!
Hip Circle Studio seeks to inspire confidence, health, and joy in women and families by providing classes and support in the areas of parenting, fitness, and dance. The Mitzvah Medley is a good deed that Hip Circle Studio is doing for the community. One Saturday a month, the Studio offers a selection of classes for no charge but accepts donations. The proceeds go to a different non-profit organization every month. Chosen by the Studio, these organizations share the similar goal of improving the lives of women and children. Participants learn about the organization and enjoy classes that otherwise may have not been available to them, the partner organization receives the support of the community, and the Studio takes a step towards making the world a better place. Everyone benefits. The partner organization: -is included on the HCS website and Facebook page for one year -is mentioned in a press release in the month before your day -is included in promotional material shared at all classes held at HCS in the month before your day -receives free attendance to the Mitzvah Medley The organization agrees to: -provide a logo and written information to use on the HCS website -include the event on their website, linking back to HCS, and otherwise actively promote it -have at least one representative of the organization present at the event -complete a post-event survey -provide a completed application To apply for a spot on our Mitzvah Medley calendar, please fill out the application that follows.
We have just added a second session of Bellydance FlairFusion Preview to the calendar. Starting Thursday, June 3 from 7:45 - 9:15, this session will cover the same content presented in the Tuesday session.
In honor of opening a physical space in Evanston, Hip Circle Studio is proud to share our first press release, written by Carrie Jackson.
Hip Circle Studio Brings Community-Centered Fitness to Evanston
EVANSTON, IL—May 16, 2010
South Evanston is welcoming a new neighbor. Hip Circle Studio, which offers classes and workshops in parenting, dance, and fitness, will celebrate its grand opening on June 1. The studio is dedicated to offering a comfortable environment for women, children, and families looking to make healthy choices.
Owned by Malik Turley, Hip Circle Studio is a community-centered haven for people in all stages of life. Malik has been teaching in the Chicagoland area for nine years and is eager to streamline her skills and passions into one location. Malik believes that fitness should be unintimidating, and the warm décor and customized music make members feel immediately at ease. By using cloth hand towels, selling BPA-free reusable water bottles, using low-VOC paint and filtering the tap water, the studio is safer for both members and the environment. The goal of every class and interaction is to increase the confidence, health, and joy of participants. A minority-owned business, Hip Circle Studio welcomes members of all abilities and backgrounds.
Malik has assisted over 50 families as a doula. She sees a need for women to have a nourishing relationship with their families and a healthy outlet for themselves. Through informational sessions, group classes and workshops, and private consultations, Hip Circle Studio is bridging a gap that often goes unaddressed. The studio also offers a variety of fitness and dance classes. Malik holds Group Fitness and Zumba certifications, and has been teaching belly-dancing for 5 years. With a wide range of classes such as Intro to Bellydance, Mother-Daughter Zumba, Strength Training for Postpartum Women, and choreography workshops such as Bellydance FlairFusion, there is sure to be something for everyone.
An Evanston native herself, Malik feels strongly about giving back to the community. Through a special series of Saturday classes called Mitzvah Medley, she will donate the proceeds from one day of classes a month to a local charity. Not-for-profit organizations that hold similar values are encouraged to apply. The studio is conveniently located near the Main Street shopping district, with ample street parking and easy access to both the El and Metra. Semi-annual and yearly memberships are available, as well as punch cards and one-time drop-in fees.
Malik Turley founded Hip Circle Studio to meet the needs of women in every stage of life. She lives in Evanston with her husband and three children, and can be found dancing with the mamas and laughing with the teenagers in her community.

I have been taking belly dance classes from Malik through the duration of my pregnancy with my third child, as well as before and after. I found bellydance to be a good way to enjoy and embrace being a woman, as well as confidence building. It was a great workout to ease my aches and pains as my belly grew during my pregnancy & extremely helpful in my post partum recovery.
