The reason I began belly dance classes was to help me with balance. I walked into my first class with Malik and I was immediately hooked. As a person with a disability, (I have MS) I had my concerns with what type of dance class to take to help me with my issues. I explained my status to Malik before class started and I knew it was immediately for me. My balance and coordination have improved. I'm way more steady and sturdier than I was before. Not to mention my husband loves the fact that I'm taking belly dance classes. Another important factor, Malik is a doll, she's very understanding, she breaks the moves down so they are easier to follow and she will answer all and any questions that I have. I took belly dance as a younger person and I was always at the back of the room never knowing what was really going on. My classes with Malik are vastly different. Malik knows all her students and is involved with everyone. She's always ready to help you. I can't think of a better way to become healthier and stronger.

The dance form evolved in women’s circles to celebrate marriage and prepare the new bride for her womanly responsibilities. The women came together in the dance again to support the mother through the birth of her child—often dancing around her while she labored. The birthing mother herself would use the round movements of the dance to help move her baby down and out, easing the trials of labor through these movements.
Zahara Fusion was born from this notion of a supportive community of women. As a group, our focus is to learn the basics and refine our skills together with improvisations and choreographies that incorporate both traditional and modern bellydance forms, including American Tribal, Cabaret, Egyptian, and even some Bollywood styles.
